David Burke is born in Liverpool (England) the 25 May 1934. He played at the National Theatre and four years at the Royal Lyceum Compagny, in Scotland, where he played Othello, Macbeth, Astrov in the Tchekhov’s play Uncle Vanya, and Flamineo in the play The White Devil. In the West-end he played in such notable productions as War And Peace, Osborne’s The Hotel in Amsterdam (English Stage Company, Royal court), Bodies or Rocket to the Moon. It was in 1984 that he co-starred with Brett in the Granada Series «The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes». He gave a young, clever, handsome and teasing interpretation of the doctor Watson, thus breaking the Hollywood stereotype of the comic Watson of Nigel Bruce. But in 1985, David Burke chose to leave the series and accept a contract with the royal Shakespeare Company. It allowed him to spend more time with his young son Tom and with his wife, actress Anna Calder-Marshall (who later guest starred in the Holmesian Granada episode The eligible Bachelor, playing the dual role of Helena and Agnes Northcote), who signed for the same contract.

During this period David Burke played notably in Maxime Gorky’s  play The Philistines.
