Né le 14 avril 1904, à Londres, Sir John (Arthur) Gielgud est considéré comme l’un des plus grands ambassadeurs (avec Sir Laurence Olivier) du théâtre britannique, et shakespearien en particulier.
Sir John, petit neveu de l’actrice Anglaise Ellen Terry, fait ses débuts, en 1921, au Old Vic Theatre (Londres) après des études au Royal Academy of Dramatic Art ; Brett a suivi un chemin assez similaire puisque, à ses débuts, après deux ans au Library Theatre de Manchester (1954-1955), il joua lui aussi sur les planches du Old Vic1, en 1956.
Les deux acteurs furent également très bien accueilli en Amérique - pour la première fois en 1928 pour Gielgud, et en 1957 pour Brett (Winter Garden, New York) 2.
Chose assez amusante, c’est grâce au même rôle, celui du «sweet prince» Hamlet, que Gielgud et Brett obtiennent leur réputation de jeunes talents (en 1929, Old Vic Company, pour le premier, et en 1961 - Strand Theatre, Londres - pour le second).
Leurs carrières prennent ensuite deux aspects différents : alors que Brett fut énormément demandé par une télévision qui prenait, à son époque, beaucoup d’essor, Sir John Gielgud, comme Sir Laurence Olivier, s’intéressa très tôt, et jusqu’à la fin de sa vie, à la mise en scène et à la production 3. Il dirigea de nombreuses pièces dont «Richard II» dans laquelle il jouait également le rôle titre, «Hamlet» (avec Richard Burton), à New York, en 1964, et fût, entre autre, metteur en scène au Queen’s Theatre (Londres) durant la saison 1937-38 et au Haymarket Theatre (Londres) pour la saison 1944-45. Il fût anobli en 1953 et reçut l‘ordre du mérite en 1996.
Gielgud ne fut jamais très attiré par le théâtre contemporain ; il préférait se concentrer sur les auteurs classiques comme Richard Brinsley Sheridan («School for Scandal»), Oscar Wilde («The important of Being Earnest»), Anton Chekhov («The Seagull») et bien sûr William Shakespeare ( «Ages of Man», lecture de différents extraits de pièces shakespeariennes, fit, en 1959, une tournée mondiale). Mais à partir des années 70 il joua tout de même dans des pièces contemporaines telles que « Home » de David Storey (1970) et «Veterans» de Charles Wood (1972).
On le retrouve également dans des productions télévisuelles et dans de nombreux films, même s’il gardait une certaine méfiance à l’égard du cinéma. On peut citer, entre autre, (voir filmographie en fin de publication) : «The Secret agent» (1936) d’après S. Maugham et dirigé par Hitchcock, «Romeo and Juliet» (1954) film en technicolor de Renato Castellani4, «Murder by Decree» (1979), «Arthur» (1981) pour lequel il gagna l’Academy Award du meilleur second rôle, «Elephant Man» (1980) avec Anthony Hopkins (en tenue tout à fait correcte, cette fois !), «Ghandi» (1982) avec Ben Kinsley, «Prospero’s Book» (1991), «Le voyage de Gulliver» avec Peter O‘Toole (1996), «Looking for Richard» (1996), et «Elisabeth» (1998) .
Ces dernières années Gielgud vécut en «semi retraite» dans le Buckinghamshire. Il y possédait une superbe maison du XVIIème siècles, avec de magnifiques jardins, qu’il partageait avec le paysagiste Martin Hensler, avec lequel il vivait depuis plus de quarante ans.
Gielgud est mort à l’âge de 96 ans, le 21 mai 2000, environ un an après son compagnon, et fut incinéré le 1 juin à Oxford. Sir John Gielgud était de ces hommes qui, avec beaucoup d’humour, répondent, lorsqu’on leur demande le secret de leur longévité, qu’ils n’ont jamais eu de régimes particuliers ni fait d’exercices, mais qu’ils fument énormément et apprécient le vin !
Il s’amusa également, alors qu’étaient célébrés ses quatre-vingt dix ans, à avouer dans une interview pour le magasine Hello qu’il ne comprenait pas Shakespeare convenablement ...!
Les écrits de Gielgud sur sa vie et son travail sont nombreux. Nous pouvons citer :
Early Stages (1938; rev. ed., 1976), une autobiographie ; Stage Directions (1963), un recueil de discours et d’essais ; Distinguished Company (1972), livre où il se rappelle de son enthousiasme de jeunesse pour des acteurs de théâtre et de cinéma ; Gielgud : An Actor and His Time (1980), en collaboration avec John Mills et John Powell – cette biographie a l’intérêt d’être très bien illustrée ; Shakespeare: Hit or Miss ? (1991), également publié sous le titre Acting Shakespeare (1992), souvenirs et observations concernant les rôles shakespeariens qu’il a joué et les pièces shakespeariennes qu’il a dirigées.
Parmi les nombreuses cassettes audio des pièces skakespeariennes se trouve un enregistrement de «The Life and Death of King Richard II» où l’on retrouve au casting : John Gielgud en Richard II, Brett en Thomas Nowbray, Duke de Norfolk et ... Edward Hardwicke ! (nous ne savons pas quel était son rôle ; l’un d’entre vous le sais peut-être ? !)

4- Outre le fait que ce film soit en technicolor, il est à remarquer que le tournage a été réalisé sur site, en Italie, et que les costumes, ainsi que les décors, étaient de la main de la peintre Leonor Fini. Laurence Harvey était Roméo, Susan Shental jouait Juliette, et le rôle du chœur était interprété par Gielgud.
