Edward Hardwicke est né le 7 août 1932 à Londres. Il est le fils de l’acteur Sir Cedric Hardwicke et de l’actrice Helena Pickard.

Le jeune Edward fit ses premiers pas sur scène dès l’âge de 7 ans, au Malvern Festival.

Il passa une partie de son enfance à Hollywood. Chose intéressante, son père a joué, pour la radio, le rôle de Sherlock Holmes (Avec Finlay Currie dans le rôle de Watson) et était très ami avec Nigel Bruce et Basil Rathbone - avec qui il joua notamment dans le film «Wing and Prayer» . C’est à Hollywood, à l’âge de 10 ans, qu’Edward Hardwicke commença sa carrière cinématographique, dans le film «A guy Named Joe», de Victor Fleming, aux côtés de Spencer Tracy. Il rentra en Angleterre pour suivre des études à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) et fit son service militaire à la Royal Air Force, où il fût officier pilote, entre 1951 et 1952. Il joua ensuite au Bristol Old Vic (où il rencontra Peter O’Toole) puis au Oxford Playhouse et au Nottingham Playhouse. C’est en 1964 qu’il entra au National Theatre mais dans une troupe différente de celle de Brett. Il y joua, entre autre, dans les pièces «Othello» de Shakespeare, «The Master Builder» de Ibsen (avec Laurence Olivier), «Royal Hunt Of the Sun» de Peter Shaffer (avec Robert Stephen), «Charley’s Aunt», «Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead» de Tom Stoppard, «The Way of the World» et «A Flea In Her Ear» (La puce à l’oreille) de Feydeau (dirigée par Jacques Charron). En 1967, il fit une tournée au Canada.

Jeremy Brett et Edward Hardwicke, même s’ils participèrent tous les deux en 1960 à l’enregistrement audio de la pièce «The Life And Death of King Richard II», ne firent donc que se croiser jusqu’au jour où David Burke demanda à ce dernier de lui succéder dans le rôle de Watson, dans la série «Sherlock Holmes» produite par Granada TV. Hardwicke joua pendant près de 8 ans, entre 1986 et 1994, un Watson posé, attentionné et attentif. Il joua également ce rôle en 1988 et 1989 au théâtre, au côté de Brett, dans la pièce de Jeremy Paul «The Secret Of Sherlock Holmes».

En 1997 il retrouva le monde Doylien puisqu’il interpréta Sir Arthur Conan Doyle dans le film «Forever» de Nick Willing, aux côtés du fils de Robert Stephen, Toby Stephen.

Edward Hardwicke a deux filles, Kate and Emma, et une belle-fille qui fait partie de la Royal Shakespeare company. Sa femme et lui vivent aujourd’hui la plupart du temps en France, dans leur ferme, en Normandie.
